Not a day goes by that I don’t think about my experience in Viet Nam, many, many times. The incredible things the Marine’s and Corpsman I was with did, every day, never really complaining, and accomplishing unbelievable things. They literally could move mountains, and got very little recognition for it. When I hear their stories at reunions, I realize that every one of them should have been awarded medals, many times over.
And my respect for grunts is unmatched. They are the “creme de la creme” of the Marine Corps!
And the stupidity and arrogance of rear echelon staff officers committing the front line Marines to tasks that they would never participate in is beyond unbelievable.
And finally, when our country’s leaders decide to go to war, they damn well better understand what they are getting us into. If you have never been in combat, you will never understand, and should not be making those kinds of decisions. And when Congress decides to start or give up on a war, think of the long term costs and consequences.
Well, at least I feel better.
